Car Thefts and Your Car

Car thefts are rising in 2022.

It seems like you can’t get on any neighborhood or social media app without seeing the news of another stolen car.

And if the car isn’t stolen, we often hear of poor souls who have gotten their catalytic converter taken out. Catalytic converter thefts increased rapidly over the last year, with claims across the nation going up 293%. Your catalytic converter helps your car with its emissions by converting toxic substances into less toxic pollutants. You might be wondering why a thief would want to get their hands on it, and the answer is simple: the precious metal it’s made of can get them a few hundred bucks or more at most scrap yards.

Getting your car or one of its parts stolen is one of the most stressful things that can happen to you. Getting a catalytic converter replaced is expensive, and support from your insurance can be hit or miss. If thieves opt to take your whole vehicle, this goes beyond just the price of its parts but the value your car brings to the table. Your car brings you to and from work, takes your kids to soccer games, and often is a source of fond memories. Whether through time spent or money spent, making the investments to prevent car theft is worth it.

What can you do to protect your car?

To prevent car theft, you can:

  • Make sure you are locking your doors. And if you can, invest in automatic locks.

  • Park in a well-lit area. If you can, park as close to your destination as possible so you can keep an eye on your vehicle.

  • Ensure your windows are completely shut. Even a slightly ajar window can help thieves break into your car and bust your locks.

  • Install a car alarm. Installing an audible car alarm can alert you when someone gets into your car and usually scares thieves away.
